Creative Mentoring

Hummingbird's Reviews

'An active & prolific writer, Vikki - a.k.a. 'Hummingbird' - shares her creative journey with her peers and her fans through blogging, posting works in progress, and maintaining an active & well-respected presence on several songwriting sites, including Just Plain Folks, Songwriter101, Irene Jackson's Songwriting Board,  the Taxi.com forum, and Muse's Muse.  She is also a founding member of the Victoria Songwriting Circle.'

Everything I know about songwriting I have learned through collaborating with musicians and lyricists, posting on message boards, and receiving the feedback of my peers. I wouldn't say I'm God's gift to songwriting, but I do always try to give of my best when reviewing the works of others. I am often asked for information on the music industry, songwriting, singing, and creativity.  I do my best to recommend resources to those who ask, and give thoughtful suggestions in response to 'how do I' requests.  It seems to me that my job is not to screen your work (although I can give feedback from my P.O.V.) but more to assist you in finding space and time to write, in finding ideas, in organizing your time, encouraging you to find space for yourself to breathe and be open to inspiration, etc.

Ideally mentoring clients should be novice lyricists, musicians, songwriters, composers, artists or just those who wish to explore their creativity. You must be over the age of 18, and have a computer, and have a sincere desire to grow in your understanding of the artist's way.  The best way to begin is for you to send me an email telling me a little about yourself, what your creative goals are, and then we will try to figure out a way to work together to help you achieve those goals.

My Philosophy

Songwriting IS a craft - one you should do for the love of it.

Writing songs (like most writing) is actually re-writing. My goal as a mentor is to encourage you in the practice of writing, of crafting lyrics that are understood when sung, that are structured so that they can be set to music, are unique & interesting in form & rhyme, and say something old in a new way.  I don't claim to understand all the nuances of commercial music genres, and so my feedback is given as one indie artist to another.

When I was a budding songwriter with dreams of glory I thought I could make the music industry listen to me.... but what I learned - from all the songwriting boards I frequent, and all the wonderful folks I've worked with - is that.... wait for it... I don't need the "commercial music industry" (read: record labels) to do music, or make money in music.

I think the basic rules for any songwriter should be:
a) be true to yourself (but open your mind),
b) study musical forms & songwriting structure,
c) network and collaborate with like-minded people,
d) yes! take lessons to better your skills,
e) wake up every day excited that you get to work on music,
f) copyright your work,
g) understand the biz but don't let it get you down,
h) experiment... think outside the box...
i) have a sense of humour & a sense of fun
j) always keep your word, be professional in attitude and deed
k) get out and listen to live music, from coffee shops to opera houses. Open your mind to the world of music... which extends far beyond North America.

Embracing the Creative Process

What I really want my clients to 'get' from me is the knowledge that the life of an artist is a process. We must find time for our art in our daily lives, for it is when we are in the act of creating, or studying (practicing) that we affect what is unseen in us. The act of 'doing' over and over again trains the subconscious to do things in a new, more holistic and natural way. Thus each 'doing' is a tiny but transformative event on the path to self-discovery and creativity. Each step, each practice, each song, each lesson, each performance, is part of a whole -- a joyfully artistic life.
